COMMON SEPTIC TANK REPAIRS IN SOUTH FLORIDA & WHAT LIFT STATIONS CAN DO

Nobody wants to have problems with their septic tank, but it does happen. There are times when septic repairs are necessary due to septic tank failure, but sometimes there are other causes.

Some septic tanks fail when the bacteria and enzymes that destroy waste are inadvertently killed off by household cleaning chemicals or strong medications taken by the owners. Also, a number of parts can break down causing failure. But there are other problems that can cause sludge build-up, gurgling drains, odors, backups, and sewage water ponding in the yard.

The most common parts needing repair or replacement are the septic pumps, filters, and tank aerators. When these break down, the sludge is not allowed to escape from the tank and it ends up overloading the drain field with solids. This causes the biological materials to be out of balance. Here are some things you’ll want to know about septic tanks and lift stations.

SEPTIC TANK REPAIRS

When you experience drainage problems with your septic system, you can suffer from all types of problems like odors and sewage backups. The methane released from a sewage system that isn’t functioning correctly can be dangerous, so be sure you aren’t breathing it in. If you need emergency septic repair in South Florida, be sure to call us at United Septic & Grease Services.

WHAT ARE LIFT STATIONS

Lift stations are pump stations in sewage collection systems, which in residential situations the septic system serves as the sewage collection system. Lift stations pump and route raw sewage from underground gravity pipelines into the septic tank.

Normally, gravity would be sufficient to keep the wastewater flowing, but it needs to be pumped when the if the septic system is located on higher ground. Sometimes a septic system is located on higher ground than the home because of excessive excavation and higher construction costs. In these cases, a lift station needs to pump the wastewater to the septic tank. There are also times when no other solution is practical and a lift station is necessary.

COMMON LIFT STATION REPAIRS

If the pump does not keep the wastewater flowing properly, the pump may not be kicking in. This problem will need to be repaired by a South Florida septic specialist like ours at United Septic & Grease Services.

The drain field can also get to the point where it is unable to absorb the wastewater into the soil. The septic specialist will need to inspect and assess the problem to determine what type of repairs need to be made to the drain field and septic tank system.

DO’S & DON’TS FOR SEPTIC SYSTEMS

There are certain things you can do and not do to keep your septic system working better longer. Here are some key points that you can share with your family to ensure everything keeps working properly.

  • Do Flush a Bio-Active Septic Tank Treatment Once Per Month – You can also use one packet of dry yeast (for cooking). This assists in growing the desirable bacteria needed in the septic tank for breaking down solid waste into liquid.
  • Do Use Septic Tank Friendly Toilet Paper
  • Don’t Flush Feminine Sanitary Products of Any Type
  • Don’t Put Fat, Oil, or Grease in the Septic Tank – Grease of any type will not break down in the septic tank and will also congeal in the pipes. Never put it down the drains.
  • Don’t Use Harsh Chemicals In The Drains – You may think it’s okay to occasionally use drain cleaner or some other chemical, but it will kill the beneficial bacteria that treat the wastewater. Try mixing 50% vinegar and 50% scalding water in a gallon jug. Pour it down the drain and let it sit over night. If the clog is still there, it should be removed by a specialist.
