WARNING SIGNS OF A SEWER LINE CLOG

One of the most common red flags when it comes to your home’s sewer line is when you have water backing up out of your drains or toilet, or you notice a gurgling sound coming from your drains.

Most homeowners are aware that your sewer line helps to transport waste water from your home to the underground sewer mains, but beyond that, they don’t give much thought to it until they experience a problem. When you have a sewer line clog, you can very quickly have a backup of raw sewage coming out of your drains which can easily result in significant damage to your home and property.

When you pay attention to the warning signs, however, and respond to the early warnings, you can actually take proactive steps to stave off severe sewer and plumbing issues with your home’s sewer line. To help you with this, we have included a short list of some of the warning signs you should be aware of that might just save you a lot of time, hassle, and money.

CLOGGED DRAINS OR TOILET

One of the most common red flags when it comes to your home’s sewer line is when you have water backing up out of your drains or toilet, or you notice a gurgling sound coming from your drains. This can essentially be your home trying to talk to you and let you know that something is amiss. Also, if you notice that whenever you start the washing machine, the toilets start percolating or you notice water around the floor drain in your basement, that is one of the first signs of a clogged sewer line.

Because of the tree-like structure of your home’s plumbing system, a clog in one drain doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to have problems with all of your drains. However, if your main sewer line is clogged, every line in your house is also going to suffer from the issue. If you notice that certain drains in your home are working fine, then the issue is likely isolated to one of the secondary lines, but if you notice that every drain in the house seems to be having the issue, you are likely going to need professional service on your main sewer line.

TREE ROOTS

Tree roots are one of the primary causes of a clogged sewer line, especially in older homes. Newer homes tend to suffer clogs primarily from feminine hygiene products, paper towels, and certain types of thicker toilet paper. However, a lot of people that have pipes or drains that are broken down tend to have tree roots that have invaded the pipes and causing it to become clogged.

In some cases, older pipes can actually be crushed by tree roots. If you are experiencing slow-flowing drains or gurgling sounds from your toilet bowls, those are some of the first signs that your sewer line is being affected by tree roots. If you don’t eventually take action to remove the roots, it will inevitably end up in a complete sewer line blockage.

BROKEN OR COLLAPSED SEWER LINES

Especially if your home is older, your sewer backups could be caused by broken, cracked, or collapsed sewer lines. Although plastic lines are the norm nowadays, older homes might still have cast iron and clay piping that can break down over time, resulting in sewer problems.

If you find that your home is displaying any of these signs, your best bet is to call a Miami plumbing professional right away so they can pinpoint the issue and take action to get it fixed. United Septic & Grease Services has a staff of fully trained plumbing experts who are always standing by and ready to assist in any way they can.
